Nicolas Tractomas (RDC318X) Teesside 1983

Large loads on Teesside were commonplace upto the end of the 90's. To see one was always spectacular. This combination was operated by Sunters of Northallerton, and came from Head Wrightsons of Stockton on Tees through to I.C.I Billingham. Here the combination has just reached the bottom of beaconsfield and is about to go up the A19 in preparation for the assault up Billingham Bank.

What on earth is that?
Must be something industrial but it looks like a beached whale or a RN sub :)

What a great and very nostalgic picture.

Terrific picture Chris, I worked on heavy haulage for some time, but never on this scale and we were always in awe of the lads from Sunters and Siddle C.
Cook, I'm sure you remember them too.On the subject of the Transcontinental
I remember a heavy haulage company in Northampton called Brackmills who operated an identical or very similar machine but I'm sure this was badged as a Tractomas/Nicolas.I know Nicolas made the modular trailer and I've looked briefly on the internet for anything about Tractomas but no success
was hoping you or any other reader can help. Regards Andy.

This was part of some cooling equipment at ICI Billingham. There were four of these at the destination site.

Nice pictures Chris especially the Sunters stuff, Andy is right the transcontinental vehicle is a Nicolas Tractomas, Reg ROC318X, the same vehicle reappeared in the colours of Econofreight after the demise of Sunters.I made a model of the same move on your photos in 1-87 scale. I recently made a model of the Tractomas ran by Brackmills mentioned by Andy also in 1-87 scale

Hi gents just as info I have at last added a couple of pics of my 1-87 scale Sunters tractomas in the transport models section. More pics to follow

The truck is in fact a Nicolas Tractomas TR66C4C. Built to order, the gallic thoroughbred utilised Cummins engine, Soma axles, and Berliet cab, which at this time was also used on the 'Transcon.
