This Albion Chieftain originally came from Sparshatts Coachbuilders of Portsmouth as they were the British Leyland supplier at this time. Our local registrations were BK, TP and RV in that order. The body was definitely not an original item. I definitely recognise the registration and considering our own haulage company (T. Cobb & Sons Ltd 1890 to 1986) was all own account work including channel island produce, she could very well have been used as one of our sub contractors at different times. Also I would have known her from when I was doing my coachpainting apprenticeship at Jack Sparshatt`s at this time, so theres even a chance I sprayed and/or signwrote her originally but I cant remember who bought her new, possibly Arthur Wringe or Alf Sutton. It`s a long time ago now and we only bought a new Leyland Super Comet (RRV 950J) in 1971, in fact our last L.A.D cabbed Albions were in 1970 (OBK 234H and OTP 547H) after which we went all ergomatic Leyland.
She looks to be shorter than the normal 14 pallet, 24ft bed which wasn`t unusual with Chieftains. Our Chieftains were all 12 ton gvw and fitted with 400 engines as opposed to our Clydesdale`s and Super Comet`s which had the 401 series engines and were plated at 16 ton gvw.
Apologies for prattling on but it`s the only way I can remember things nowadays haha.
If I can be of any help with her please feel free to contact me.
Thank you for posting this photo.
